Trekking
in Langtang
Region
Langtang
area is
toward
the north
of Kathmandu
Valley.
The scenery
here is
spectacular,
and the
trek more
adventurous
as fewer
tourists
visit
the area.
To the
west of
Langtang
is Ganesh
Himal
with range
of 6,000
to 7,000
meters.
The main
ethnic
groups living
here are
Sherpas
and Tamangs.
The forest
in the region
have temperate
and sub
alpinevegetation.
Wildlife
includes
migratorybirds,
deer, monkey,
Thar and
Pica.The
best time
for trekking
n the
Langtang
area is
spring and
autumn.
Most of
the trekking
routes
in Helambu
and Langtang
are well
served
with teahouse
making
independent
trekking
quite
possible.
But, there
are no
such facilities
in the
Ganesh
Himal
area of
anja La
area.
Attraction-People and
Culture.
Langtang to Kathmandu
Settingout
from Kathmandu
by coach,
bus or better
still, a
4-wheel
drive, beyond
the ringroad
at Balaju
the road
climbs very
quickly
out of the
valley past
the Nagarjun
Royal forest.
Soon leaving
the city
far below.
When
you reach
the rim
of the valley
there are
long views
to the
left of
silhouetted
hills
disappearing
into the
western
haze,
and then
to the
right
at Kakani
the great
snow peaks
of Langtang,
Ganesh and
Manaslu.
The read
winds
on around
lash green
hillsides
terraced
with tiny
flooded
rice –fields,
past red
plastered
farm houses
thatched
with straw
where
you catch
glimpses
of the
country
people
at work
and play,
a life
which
has changed
little
over the
centuries
then continue
along
the ending
mountain
road until
you drop
down into
the Trisuli
Valley,
reaching
the largest
town Trisuli
Bazaar,
70Km from
Kathmandu,
after
3 hours
driving
by car
(5 hours
by bus
) under
normal
conditions.
From the
Trisuli
it is
50Km to
Dhunche.
Normally
drive
3 hours
from Betrawati.
The road
zigzaga
steeply
backwards
and forwards
up the
mountainside
through
small
villages
and terraced
farmlands.
Then north
again
above
the dramatic
Trisuli
gorge
until
you reach
the Langtang
National
Park headquarters,
just before
Dhunche.
Now your
in different
world
to the
west the
vast white
bulk of
Ganesh
Jumal
soar up
from the
tiny river
fr below
and ahead
the horizon
is closed
by the
line of
snow covered
peaks
across
the Tibetan
border.
Attraction-Flora
and fauna
The forests
of Helambu
and Lang
tang are
a prime
example
of temperature
and sub
alpine
vegetation.
The dense
oak and
pine forests
on the
trail
up the
Lang tang
Valley
are of
particular
interest.
As usual
in this
part of
Nepal,
the rhododendrons
from a
spectacular
display
during
spring,
Wildlife
in the
area is
dominated
by many
bird species
with migratory
birds
using
the Gosainkund
area as
a temporary
sanctuary.
Look for
deer and
monkeys
in the
lower
forests
and, perhaps,
Thar and
Pica the
alpine
hillsides.
When to
visit?
The best
times
for trekking
in the
Lang tang
area are
the main
seasons
of spring
(February
to late
April)
and autumn
(late
September
to late
November).
Winter
is possible,
especially
in Helambu,
but higher
parts
may have
too much
snow.
Ganesh
Himal
and Ganja
La are
likely
to be
closed
by snow
at this
time.
